It risks a catastrophic chain snap that can destroy your engine case or lock up your rear wheel at highway speeds. To secure a smooth, uninterrupted tour, you must master a meticulous chain maintenance protocol.

Step 1: The Thermal Preparation and Cleaning Blast
Never apply chemical degreasers to a cold, stagnant chain. A proper clean up operation begins immediately after a long riding session while the metal links and internal rubber seals are still warm from friction. Pull the motorcycle onto its center stand or a portable trail jack on a flat surface. Place a sheet of heavy cardboard beneath the lower chain run to protect the environment. Spray a generous layer of specialized, O-ring safe kerosene based chain cleaner across the inner and outer rollers.
